SAMASTIPUR, Aug. 21 -- Unidentified miscreants opened several rounds of fire at the residence of former Youth RJD district president, Amresh Rai, in Samastipur district, police said on Wednesday. Police further said that the incident occurred at Ramaiya village late Tuesday night, which falls under the jurisdiction of Mohiuddin Nagar police station of the district. CCTV footage showed around 15-20 armed men with covered faces firing shots and hurling abuses while challenging Rai to come out. Calling the attack a political conspiracy, Rai alleged that the assailants had intended to kill him. "If the grill lock had broken, I would not have been alive today. My father was murdered in 1988 when I was eight, and the same elements had forced me to withdraw the case," he said, claiming that liquor smugglers, local strongmen, and hired criminals were involved. Rai, who had contested the 2024 Lok Sabha polls from Ujiarpur as an independent candidate, further alleged that some villagers, including a murder accused who had tried to kill him last year, were behind the incident. He said his life remained under constant threat and described the attack as a political conspiracy. Patori Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) BK Medhavi said police rushed to the spot after receiving information about the firing at night. CCTV footage is being examined to verify its authenticity. The officer also pointed to a long-running feud within Rai's extended family, noting that his father's two siblings, who live in the same courtyard, have been locked in disputes over drainage discharge....
