KATIHAR, Aug. 7 -- Police in Bihar's Katihar district rescued a married woman and her alleged paramour from the clutches of a violent mob after the duo was reportedly caught in a compromising position and subjected to brutal public humiliation on Wednesday morning, officials said. The 32-year-old tribal woman and a 40-year-old man identified as Shakil - both married and belonging to different communities - were allegedly beaten, their heads shaved, faces blackened, garlanded with shoes, and paraded through the village to shame them. The incident occurred in Rahta village under the jurisdiction of Falka police station. "Villagers held a panchayat and later pronounced a verdict to parade them after tonsuring their heads and garlanding them with shoes to disgrace them in society," said Katihar Superintendent of Police (SP) Shikhar Choudhary, adding that a purported video of the incident has also gone viral. The SP confirmed that both the individuals were rescued and brought safely to the police station. "They are in the police station and are safe. An FIR is being lodged, and a detailed probe is underway," he said over the phone, adding, "So far, no arrests have been made, but strict legal action will be taken against the culprits." Police sources revealed that both individuals are married with children and had reportedly been in a relationship for some time. It was the man's wife who rushed to the police station seeking help, which brought the matter to the police's attention. A team was immediately dispatched to rescue the two. Security forces have been deployed in the village following the incident, as tensions persist due to the inter-community nature of the relationship. This incident bears resemblance to a similar case in September 2023, where a man was brutally beaten, his head forcibly shaved, beard removed, and made to wear a garland of shoes before being paraded in public after a woman accused him of molestation and harassment....
