man shoots self after police confrontation
Dehradun, Sept. 15 -- A 36-year-old man wanted in multiple criminal cases in Haryana allegedly shot himself after being cornered by police near a relative's house in Dehradun on Sunday, police said, adding that the man injured an officer of the Haryana police in Haridwar a day earlier.
The accused, Sunil Kapoor, originally from Jind, Haryana, opened fire on sub-inspector Surendra of Haryana police near Haridwar bus stand on September 13, police said, adding that a case was registered against him after the incident. "Sub Inspector Surendra, who had arrived with a five-member police team to arrest him, sustained bullet injuries in his stomach and hand and is undergoing treatment at AIIMS Rishikesh," said Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh.
The SSP added that a joint team of Haridwar, Jind and Dehradun police tracked Kapoor down to Laxman Chowk, where he was soon cornered and asked to surrender. "Instead of surrendering, the accused shot himself with his licensed revolver. He died on the spot," he said.
Kapoor's criminal record included multiple FIRs related to assault, extortion, fraud, and cyber offences under the IT Act, police said. Cases were also registered against him in Haridwar, most recently under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, besides several pending investigations in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh for financial crimes and intimidation....
