ARARIA, July 23 -- The special court for protection of children from sexual offences (POCSO) awarded 20-year imprisonment to a man on Tuesday for sexually assaulting a six-year-old girl. According to the prosecution, 26-year-old Jitendra Sharma, a resident of Kusiyargaon under Araria town police station limits sexually assaulted a six-year-old girl brutally at a distance from her house after luring her with chocolates on July 23, 2019. Later, the traumatised girl was recovered and medical examination confirmed the incident. Based on the complaint from the victim, the police lodged an FIR under the POCSO ACT and the accused was later arrested after his identity was ascertained. The accused even confessed to his crime before the police. Special Court for POCSO cases judge Ajay Kumar also slapped a fine of Rs.50,000 on the accused. The court also directed the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) to pay Rs.5 lakh to the victim from the compensation fund - Rs.1.50 lakh to be paid immediately for her livelihood, and the remaining Rs.3.50 lakh to be deposited in a bank account in the victim's name for a fixed period. The amount is to be released to her once she attains adulthood.
