BETTIAH, Dec. 7 -- Areraj police and the Special Task Force (STF), in a joint operation on Friday, arrested two people, including a man who turned his business rivalry into a personal vendetta by hiring criminals to extort Rs.20 lakh from his own brother-in-law earlier this year, police said on Saturday. The startling revelation came after the arrest of Rahul Tiwari, who runs a used-car business in Motihari, and Manish Tiwari of Muzaffarpur. Both were arrested on Friday. "During interrogation, the two confessed that they had conspired with notorious Motihari criminals Chhotu Rana and Abhishek Rana due to business rivalry. They also used them to threaten their brother-in-law, Arjun Choudhary," said Pratyasha Kumari, Station House Officer (SHO), Areraj. On April 30, criminals called Arjun Pathak, owner of Areraj-based First Choice Vehicles, and demanded a ransom of Rs.20 lakh, threatening him with dire consequences if he refused to pay. Following his complaint, a joint team of Areraj police and the STF began tracking the extortion calls using scientific methods and technical surveillance. As the investigation progressed, it revealed the involvement of Pathak's own brother-in-law in the extortion plot, police said.
