LJP(RV) sets sights on key NDA-held seats in upcoming Bihar polls
PATNA, Sept. 25 -- Chirag Paswan-led Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) is eyeing at least six constituencies currently held by alliance partners BJP, JD(U) and Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular), fuelling speculation of a possible tussle over seat-sharing within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in Bihar, due in less than two months.
According to a senior LJP(RV) leader, the party has set its sights on Govindganj (East Champaran), Lalganj (Vaishali) and Rosera (Samastipur) - all represented by BJP legislators - along with Sikandra (Jamui), held by HAM(S), Matihani (Begusarai) held by JD(U) and Chakai (Jamui), won by an Independent. "These are constituencies where our candidates performed strongly in the 2015 and 2020 Assembly polls as well as in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections," the leader said, requesting anonymity.
Raju Tewari, state LJP president, had won the Govindganj Assembly seat in 2015 and came third in 2020. He is interested in contesting from the same seat again even as he refrained from commenting on seat sharing, saying, "We will wait for the NDA to announce it".
Admitting that wresting these seats from allies would not be easy, the leader added, "There is bound to be resistance, but we are confident our case is strong."
The party has also renewed its push for LJP(RV) chief and Union minister Chirag Paswan to contest the state polls. "If Chiragji enters the fray, it will give the NDA a boost in many neighbouring constituencies," said Hulas Pandey, chairman of the party's state parliamentary board.
Claiming that Chirag Paswan's recent state-wide tour had drawn overwhelming response," Pandey added, "We expect to get better seats this time. Some of them are our traditional strongholds."
The LJP(RV) has been on an upswing since the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, when it won all five seats it contested - Vaishali, Hajipur, Samastipur, Khagaria and Jamui. In contrast, the undivided LJP in 2020 could win only one of the 135 Assembly seats it contested outside the NDA, though it finished second in nine and third in around 91 constituencies. Earlier, in 2015, as part of the NDA, it had contested 42 seats and secured two victories.
"We have already screened our potential candidates based on their past performance in the last two Assembly polls and the 2024 general elections. The final decision will be taken by our national parliamentary board under Chirag Paswan's leadership, once seat-sharing talks within the NDA are concluded," Pandey said....
