Leopard injures forest staffer during rescue op
BETTIAH, July 10 -- Wreaking havoc in several villages for the past few days, a leopard that strayed from the Valmiki Tiger Reserve (VTR) attacked and injured a forest staffer during a rescue operation at a village in Bihar's West Champaran on Wednesday, officials said.
Nesamani K, conservator and field director of VTR, said tracker Rajkumar Kushwaha was injured by the animal at Baluahwa village under the Chiwuhara forest range. "The rescue operation is underway," he added.
For past seven days, residents of Gudguddi, Santpur, and Baluahwa villages in Gudguddi panchayat, Ramnagar block, have been living in fear due to the movement of the leopard in the area. "So far, the leopard has killed two goats," said Amit Kumar, range officer under the Chiwuhara forest range.
Sources said the animal has been frequently changing its location, making it difficult for the forest department team to track it even through pugmarks. With the deployment of drone cameras, the team now hopes to locate the leopard soon and initiate the tranquilisation process....
