PATNA, Oct. 13 -- Politics make strange bedfellows, and that is once again getting apparent in Bihar ahead of election to present a confusing scenario, with leaders crossing over from one party to another with impunity to secure seats for them as well as their wards and parties welcoming them to bolster their prospects by getting the arithmetic right. After former MP Arun Kumar, once a bitter critic of Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, returned to the JD(U) fold on Saturday to offset the entry of Rahul Sharma, son of eight-time MLA late Jagdish Sharma, to RJD, two more MLAs of RJD (Vibha Devi from Nawada and Prakash Veer from Rajauli (reserved) from the Nawada district tendered their resignation to the Vidhan Sabha Speaker Nand Kishor Yadav Saturday evening and are set to join the NDA constituent JD-U. Vibha Devi is the wife of former RJD MLA Rajballabh Yadav, who could not contest 2020 Lok Sabha election due to his conviction in the case involving rape of a minor girl, but was acquitted of the charges on August 14 this year. A strongman of the area, Rajballabh is set to field his wife again. The return of Arun Kumar,66, to the JD(U) fold is seen as significant, as he was runners up to JD-U's Chandeshwar Chandravanshi from Jehanabad seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections by a small margin of 2000 votes. Though he had won the seat in as JD-U candidate 1999 and as RLSP candidate in 2014, he is still considered a force in the area. RJD's Surendra Yadav won the seat in 2024, when Arun Kumar finished third. This time, Arun Kumar plans to field his son Rituraj from the seat. As far as resignations from the Vidhan Sabha are concerned, there are eight expected and four of them have already tendered their resignation, while one is expected any time. Most of them are those who had bailed out the Nitish Kumar-led NDA government in the 2024 trust vote despite being in the INDIA bloc and faced disqualification, which could not happen even as the term of the Vidhan Sabha neared its end. Those who have already resigned as MLA are Sangita Kumari, Chetan Anand, Bharat Bind (all RJD), Murari Gautam of the Congress. RJD's Nilam Devi (wife of don-turned-politician Anant Singh) had also crossed over to vote for NDA and she is also set to reign. She would not contest this time. Anant Singh, out of jail now following his acquittal in August, 2025 in Arms Act case, will contest his traditional Mokama seat on the JD-U ticket. Another RJD MLA from Suryagarha seat Prahlaad Yadav, who voted for the Nitish government, is also expected to tender his resignation to join the NDA. JD-U MLA from Parbatta seat Sanjiv Kumar, who was accused of trying to side with the RJD during the trust vote, has joined the RJD, but is yet to tender his resignation from the Vidhan Sabha, but is likely to do so in the coming days. "Today is Sunday. May be more will quit on Monday or later," said a Vidhan Sabha official. Switchover by a large number of senior leaders this time is also said to because several leaders desire to field their wards. Arun Kumar wants his son Rituraj to contest, JD-U MP Girdhari Yadav's son Chanakya Prakash Ranjan has already joined RJD and is tipped for Belhar seat in Banka district. However, this is not a new development in the JD(U). In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, JD-U minister Ashok Choudhary had also fought on the LJP ticket and won from Samastipur despite the party fielding its own candidate and son of another minister in the Nitish cabinet. In the Congress party also, Rajya Sabha MP and former state president Akhilesh Singh and another former State Congress president Madan Mohan Jha also want tickets for their sons. Former Bihar Congress president Ashok Ram who joined the JD(U) in August, also wants his son to contest from Kusheshwarsthan seat in Darbhanga....
