PATNA, July 6 -- The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad, who began his 13th term as party president on Saturday, heaped praise on his son and leader of the Opposition in Bihar assembly, Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, for his relentless work for the people and said that the time has come to give him full responsibility. He exhorted the gathering of party workers and senior leaders at the 28th foundation day of the party at Bapu Sabhagar, Patna, to unite behind Tejashwi who has the ability to lead from the front. The national council also backed the party's call for statewide bandh on July 9 against the Election Commission of India's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which, according to the party, is aimed at disenfranchising the marginalised sections. Prasad thanked the people for bestowing trust on him for so long and said that he would not let their trust be betrayed. He emphasized that he has always stood firm on implementing policies for the uplift of the marginalised and backwards. "Everyone knows what Lalu Yadav stands for. I implemented the Mandal Commission and Lohia's principles." Positioning Tejashwi as the face of the upcoming elections, Lalu urged workers to rally behind him, adding, "The BJP is selling the country; spread this message. Help Tejashwi in the elections. I call him every evening to check on progress. He is working very hard." Addressing the gathering, Tejashwi called for a revolution to oust the Nitish Kumar-led NDA government. "In 2025, slogans won't suffice; we need action to bring a revolution and present a gift to Lalu ji by removing Nitish," he said. He also launched the 'Mai Bahin Yojana' forms at the occasion and party workers distributed them among women. Tejashwi also slammed the NDA government over the sensational murder of prominent businessman Gopal Khemka. He also toot potshots at sections of the media for ignoring the Opposition, warning, "If they don't change, we'll urge workers to boycott newspapers." On ticket distribution for upcoming state elections, he stressed that it would be merit-based and that the RJD would conduct a survey to judge suitable candidates. The RJD also reiterated its announcement of starting agitation against the ongoing electoral roll revision exercise in Bihar from July 9 when it would organise a state-wide bandh. As Bihar's political temperature rises, the July 9 bandh may set the stage for a fierce battle of ballots in coming days. Party leaders said that the SRI is a deliberate attempt to snatch voting rights of the poor voters in Bihar. Tejashwi's mother Rabri Devi, also former CM, urged voters of Bihar to only show voter ID cards as proof and reject demands for additional documents like birth certificates, etc. "How can those who've lost family members provide such proof? This is a deliberate plot to strip the poor of their voting rights," she said, questioning the timing of the exercise that is happening right before the upcoming elections. She accused the NDA government of targeting marginalised groups like Dalits, Muslims, and migrant workers....
