Lalu pitches for son Tejashwi as Bihar CM face; pressure on GA
PATNA, June 20 -- RJD chief Lalu Prasad on Thursday exhorted party workers at the state council meeting in Patna to work unitedly in the forthcoming Assembly polls so that his younger son and leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Prasad Yadav becomes next chief minister of state, a clear indication that RJD being the senior constituent in the Opposition INDIA bloc is going to project the 35-yr old Yadav scion as CM face of the party and may put pressure on all allies, including Congress, for a formal announcement of Yadav's candidature to the top post.
"We have to oust the RSS and CM Nitish Kumar from power in the state. We have to work unitedly to make Tejashwi the next CM of the state," Prasad said, while delivering a small speech at the conclusion of the state council meeting of the party at Bapu bhawan here, where the party's newly elected state president Mangani Lal Mandal was officially declared as new incumbent to the post.
In his speech, Mandal, who hails from extremely backward caste (EBC) group, also exhorted party workers to work diligently to make Tejashwi next CM, stating that, "winds of change are already blowing in Bihar and this present government would go soon".
The RJD , being the senior constituent of the INDIA bloc or Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) in Bihar, is keen that all allies of the six party Opposition alliance should declare Tejashwi as CM face of the coalition ahead of the October-November polls in the state. "Tejashwi is RJD CM candidate and there is no doubt on it. It is also understood he is CM face of the Mahagathbandhan. But a formal announcement should be done now," said a senior RJD leader, seeking anonymity.
But so far, announcement of Tejashwi as CM face of Mahagathbandhan has remained in abeyance with speculation that Congress, the second largest constituent in the alliance, is not keen on declaration of a CM face of the alliance before the polls.
Tejashwi was made CM face of Mahagathbandhan in 2020 Assembly polls but the GA had failed to form a government in Bihar by falling short of few MLAs, leading to formation of the NDA government led by CM Kumar.
In last couple of months after the formation of the coordination committee of the GA, in which Tejashwi has been made chairman, there have been multiple times when questions regarding formal announcement of the CM face of the alliance have been asked to Congress and Left leaders. But they have all remained ambiguous on the matter. Now, there are indications the RJD wants Tejashwi to be made official CM face ahead of the polls and may exert pressure on Congress and Left parties for this as otherwise there are chances fissures could intensify within the alliance, sources in the GA said.
Incidentally, on Wednesday, CPI-ML(Liberation) chief Dipankar Bhattacharya did acknowledge that the former deputy CM would be the CM, if the GA wins the polls.
Meanwhile, the meeting was attended by all top RJD leaders except former state president Jagdanand Singh. It was said Singh had not come for being unwell even though both Lalu and Tejashwi thanked Singh's role in steering the party for two terms as state head of party....
