MADHUBANI, Jan. 3 -- A daily wage labourer named Mohammad Murshid Alam was brutally assaulted by a mob that allegedly mistook him to be a Bangladeshi in Chakdah village under the Rajnagar police station limits in Madhubani district of Bihar, police said. The incident occurred on December 30, 2025, added police. The victim is said to be a resident of Parmanandpur village panchayat under Basantpur block in Supaul district. His native place falls under the jurisdiction of Birpur police station in Supaul. He had reportedly travelled to Madhubani in search of work. According to statements of Alam quoted by local media, he was stopped by a group of three to four people around noon during his lunch break when he stepped out of his rented accommodation. The assailants allegedly accused him of being Bangladeshi. When he denied the allegation, the group chased him and assaulted him with sticks, causing serious injuries, particularly to his head. He was also asked to raise slogans like "Jai Shri Ram". After being brutally bruised, he was reportedly paraded through the village as the crowd swelled, before being abandoned. Later, local residents rescued him and admitted him to a hospital for treatment. In his statement to the police, Alam alleged that the attackers threatened to kill him, insisting that he was Bangladeshi. He maintained that he works as a mason and earns his livelihood through daily-wage labour to support his family. The incident came to light after a video of the assault surfaced on social media. Taking cognisance of the footage, police verified the video and registered an FIR based on the victim's complaint. Superintendent of Police Yogendra Kumar said that two accused have been identified in connection with the incident and raids are underway to arrest them. He assured that strict action would be taken against those responsible.
