Jharkhand jewellery heist planned from Bihar jail, finds police probe
PATNA, June 28 -- Police investigations into the daring dacoity at Aastha jewellers on Chas Road in Jharkhand's Bokaro on June 23 have pointed to a dangerous trend of criminals operating from Bihar jails and getting their jobs done through local henchmen, a senior police officer familiar with the matter said.
"The incident was the result of meticulous planning by a gang of Patna and Motihari based criminals. The plan, hatched in Beur Central Jail, led by under trial prisoner Awinash Srivastava alias Amit, culminated in masked and armed robbers looting gold ornaments worth Rs.4 crore," said another officer, who was also part of the probe team.
Bihar STF had on June 25 arrested six criminals involved in the incident and recovered looted articles -- 23 gold rings, six mangalsutras, a gold bracelet, car, three cell phones and Rs.13,820 in cash -- from them.
Four robbers were identified as Rahul Patel alias Diamond (Patna City), Raushan Singh (Bettiah), Nitesh Kumar Tiwari (Vaishali) and Aditya Raj (Motihari). They were arrested from Alamganj police station area, while Prince Kumar Suman and Musaffir Hawari were arrested from Motihari.
Investigation revealed that Rahul Patel, who met Srivastava in Beur jail, began plotting the heist six months ago. "With the assistance of a local associate, who remains absconding, the gang meticulously planned the crime. They conducted detailed reconnaissance of the premises, mapped entry and exit routes, and finalised logistics," the investigation details.
Bokaro SP Harvinder Singh said the incident lasted only seven minutes and was captured on the CCTV.
During interrogation, Rahul confessed that Awinash hired him along with Karan alias Deva and Ronit Golu alias Biru to commit the crime. On the instruction of jailed criminal, they surveyed the area on June 12 and 13 and then stayed in a Purulia (West Bengal) hotel, to later return to Patna. On June 23, the robbers on a car and two-wheelers arrived at Chas and committed the crime.
"A police team will arrive in Patna to interrogate Awinash and he would be taken on remand for further investigation," the SP said.
Awinash has 20 murder cases registered against him. After his MCA from Delhi's Jamia Milia Islamia University, he was hired to work with Infosys. It was all going smooth for him until that day in 2002 which changed his life forever. Awinash's father Lala Sinha alias Lalan Srivastava, a former MLC, was murdered by goons. He turned to crime thence....
