J'khand seeks nod to increase medical seats
Jamshedpur, March 23 -- Jharkhand government has submitted a proposal to increase undergraduate (UG) and post graduate (PG) seats in government medical colleges across the state to the National Medical Council (MMC), aiming to take the number of MBBS seats up to 750 and PG seats to over 350, officials said on Sunday.
"Our focus is on increasing the PG seats so that the medical education system can be streamlined and improved significantly. This will help us meet the requirement of specialist doctors and teaching doctors. This will also help us provide quality treatment facilities to the people. Timely diagnosis, treatment and cure of diseases will be also possible with the increase in the number of UG and PG seats in overnment medical colleges across the state," Ajay Kumar Singh, additional chief secretary in-charge of Jharkhand health, medical education and family welfare department, told HT.
Officials said that the number of UG seats in the Jamshedpur-based Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College Hospital (MGMMCH) has already been increased to 150 from existing 100 and PG seats has been hiked to 51 from existing 45 this year.
"Similarly, proposal for increasing the UG seats to 150 from existing 100 each in Dumka, Dhanbad and Hazaribagh medical colleges has been sent to the NMC. Proposal has also been sent to hike the number of UG seats in RIMS-Ranchi to 250 from existing 180," the state's proposal sent to NMC,, has stated....
