J'khand's wanted outlaw brought from Azerbaijan
RANCHI, Aug. 24 -- The Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) of Jharkhand police on Saturday brought gangster Mayank Singh to Ranchi following his extradition from Azerbaijan, people aware of the development said.
The team led by ATS SP Rishav Kumar Jha visited Azerbaijan to bring back Singh, alias Sunil Meena, wanted in around 50 cases in Jharkhand, Bihar and Rajasthan, after the completion of the formalities as per the extradition treaty between the two countries.
"This is the first successful extradition in the history of Jharkhand Police. We hope the remaining criminals who are abroad will also be brought back soon through extradition or deportation. This is a huge achievement, and credit goes to our DGP, the CM and the support of both the state and central governments," Jha said.
The official said the effort to extradite Singh was on for past several months and took time as the extradition involved judicial proceedings in the country from where extradition was done. Singh is stated to be a key member of the notorious Aman Sahu gang, who was killed in an encounter in March, and plays an important role in liaising with other gangsters based in other locations.
"He has been associated with Aman Sahu and other gangsters. We will interrogate him for further details," Jha said. On the speculations of Singh also being associated with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, the SP said they too had certain information about that and it would be verified during interrogation.
Singh was later produced in a court in Ramgarh from where he was sent into police remand, officials said. People aware of the development said Singh was apprehended in Datu in Azerbaijan in October last year after an Interpol Red Notice was issued against him by the authorities. Kumar was geolocated in Azerbaijan through close follow up by CBI through Interpol with NCB-Baku.
Officials said a Red Notice was published by the CBI through Interpol on October 10 last year on request from Jharkhand Police. Red Notice alerts all the 196 member countries to detain a fugitive.
"An extradition request was sent to Azerbaijan authorities on January 7, 2025 through diplomatic channels. Subsequently a team of Jharkhand Police was formed to bring back the subject from Azerbaijan," an official said....
