Jamshedpur, Aug. 13 -- Padma Shri Jamuna Tudu, popularly known as Jharkhand's 'Lady Tarzan' for saving thousands of acres of forest and planting lakhs of trees over the past 28 years, has been invited to the Independence Day eve dinner hosted by President Droupadi Murmu on August 14. "I will leave for Delhi on Thursday. It's a moment of honour for me and hundreds of women activists in my teams across East Singhbhum district who have been battling to stop tree felling and carrying out massive plantation drives in destroyed forests. President Madam is very close to me, and I have visited the Rashtrapati Bhavan on her invitation earlier too. She has been an inspiration and like an elder sister guiding me," Tudu told HT on Tuesday. Jamuna Tudu started her battle against the timber mafia in 1997 in the Chakulia forests. "In 1997, I started a tree plantation in the destroyed forests nearby and formed a team of women who would not allow any tree felling. Many threats were given to me. I was beaten up brutally at the Kokpara Station in 2013. They forcibly entered my house and attacked me in 2009. All of them are now in jail, though," recalled Tudu....
