BETTIAH, Nov. 8 -- Surrounded by hilly rivers on all sides, cut off from neighbouring villages, neglected by the government, and grappling with multiple hardships - from erratic electricity supply to poor mobile connectivity - a large section of villagers living across 32 hamlets in the Don area of Bihar's West Champaran district have decided to boycott voting in the ongoing Assembly elections. Hindustan Times spoke to the some of Booth Level Officers (BLOs) posted in Don area in Ramnagar block and shocked to know the congruity in their statement regarding voters intention to boycott the elections. "We made a door-to-door visit in our respective area and faced a similar situation where the villagers of as many as 32 settlements flatly refused to receive voter slips," said Bhawsindhu Prasad, a government teacher and BLO of booth number 5 at Uttkramit Madhya Vidyalay at Gardidon in Ramnagar block. Corroborating the fact further, Premishla Devi, an Anganwari Sevika and BLO attached with Madhya Vidyalaya Bankatwa said, "Like many other BLOs, I too have submitted the voter slip with block office as there is no taker of it. They all have announced to keep off from voting." "Donwasi ki yahi pukar, abki baar vote bahishkaar (Vote boycott by all and sundry). Vote boycott till our demands of roads, bridge, electricity, internet, education and health facilities are addressed." So goes the slogan in Don area as things stand today. Video footage emerging from the region reflects the villagers' indignation. "No, we cannot accept this voter slip, come what may," say a group of villagers when approached by a Booth Level Officer (BLO) with voter slips. Located about 30 to 55 km from the Ramnagar block headquarters, villages such as Naurangiya Don, Gardi Don, Khairhani Don, Kamarchinawa Don, Semarahani Tola, Piprahwa Tola, Matiyarwa Tola, Majhuraha Tola Don, Laxmipur Don, Birwatand, Sinrahwa Don, Chulahiya Don, Narkatiya Don, and Muwha Don - among 32 such settlements - are seething with anger just days ahead of the last phase of the polls on November 11. The counting of votes will be held on November 14....
