Independent candidate held with Rs.55,500 cash
PATNA, Oct. 22 -- Independent candidate from the Sheikhpura Assembly constituency, Vijay Kumar, landed in trouble on Tuesday after a police team, during a vehicle inspection at the Chhatiyana check post in Harnaut block of Nalanda district, recovered cash and suspicious bank documents from him.
A total of 37 blank cheques worth Rs.5 lakh each were found in his possession.
During the search, police discovered Rs.55,500 in cash.
The cheques bore the signature of Vijay Kumar Sharma, but the names of the payees, account numbers, and other details were left blank.
According to the police, the documents and cash were being transported from Patna towards Belchhi.
Harnaut SHO Amardeep Kumar confirmed the incident and said that the recovery of such a large amount and blank cheques during the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct was a serious matter.
The police have seized the cheques and the cash.
The entire matter has been reported to the Income Tax Department, which has taken over the investigation.
The Income Tax department is trying to ascertain where and for what purpose such a large amount was being transported during the election period in the state....
