IMD issues orange alert for rain in parts of Uttarakhand
Mussoorie, June 25 -- With rainfall across all 13 districts, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued an orange alert for several districts, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds till June 28.
According to IMD officials, the monsoon made a strong onset over the region, with districts such as Bageshwar, Dehradun, Rudraprayag and Nainital witnessing intense rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 km per hour at isolated locations.
"All district have come under the monsoon's influence as of Tuesday and moderate to heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places across all districts over the next four days," said Bikram Singh, director of Dehradun centre of IMD.
The IMD stated that several areas recorded substantial rainfall. In Tehri, Narendra Nagar received 14 mm of rain, while in Dehradun district, Vikas Nagar recorded 12 mm, Asharori 11.5 mm, Chakrata 8.5 mm, and Rani Majra 6 mm. Koti in Tehri district recorded 5.5 mm, Laksar in Haridwar recorded 3.5 mm, Kalsi in Dehradun recorded 2 mm, and Dwarahat in Almora also recorded 2 mm. Bageshwar district reported intense spells of rain between 10 am and 12 noon.
Across the state, 10.7 mm of average rainfall was recorded in the 24 hours leading up to 8.30 am Tuesday. Bageshwar recorded the highest rainfall at 36.7 mm, followed by Rudraprayag at 26 mm, Nainital at 23.9 mm, Dehradun at 17.4 mm, Pithoragarh at 11.8 mm, and Chamoli at 11.5 mm. Uttarkashi district did not receive any rain during this period.
Sama in Bageshwar recorded the highest rainfall at 118 mm, followed by Haripur in Dehradun with 100 mm and Rudraprayag with 78.8 mm. Nainital saw 58.5 mm, Bhikiyasain in Almora registered 69 mm, and Mukteshwar received 42.1 mm. Other areas including Dharchula, Loharkhet, Thal, Nandprayag, Jaspur, Narendranagar, Ganganagar, Nankeshri, Karnprayag, Haridwar, Gairsain, Kapkot and Laksar also reported widespread precipitation.
The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall on Wednesday in Dehradun, Rudraprayag, Bageshwar and Nainital districts, along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. Other districts are also likely to experience intense spells of rain at isolated locations.
The orange alert will remain in effect for Thursday in Bageshwar, Nainital, and Rudraprayag districts, with heavy rain also expected in Dehradun, Tehri, Chamoli, Champawat, etc....
