Mussoorie, May 5 -- Heavy rains accompanied by hail, thunderstorms, and lightning were reported in large parts of Uttarakhand on Sunday night, disrupting normal life in several districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the next three days, warning of further intense weather activity across the state. The IMD, Dehradun Centre, said that several areas, including Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Dehradun, Mussoorie, Yamunotri, Gangotri and Bageshwar, experienced widespread rainfall, while several other districts recorded isolated showers. In the 24-hour period ending at 8.30am on Sunday, the state recorded an average of 5mm rainfall. Bageshwar received the highest with 16.8mm, followed by 16mm in Rudraprayag, 14.5mm in Chamoli, 7.6mm in Almora, 4.7mm in Tehri, 3.4mm in Pithoragarh, 1.7mm in Uttarkashi, and 1.2mm in Dehradun. According to the IMD forecast, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (40-50km/h) are expected to hit seven or more districts over the next three days. The orange alert warns of light to moderate rainfall, with occasional intense spells that could disrupt travel and outdoor activity. In Mussoorie, heavy downpours began around 4pm on Sunday and continued for over two hours, causing waterlogging in several areas. Meanwhile, Pantnagar in Udham Singh Nagar recorded the highest maximum temperature at 34.8degC, while Mukteshwar in Nainital district logged the lowest minimum temperature at 9.6degC.
