BETTIAH, May 1 -- A government middle school in East Champaran district witnessed high drama after its headmaster was arrested for allegedly reporting to duty in an inebriated condition, police said on Wednesday. The incident took place in dry Bihar, where a total prohibition on alcohol has been in place since April 5, 2016. Police further said that the headmaster was identified as Ramsogarth Mahato, posted at Rajkiya Utkramit Madhya Vidyalaya at Kharuhi under Kundwa Chainpur block. A resident of Bishambharpur village in Dhaka block, Mahato reportedly reached the school around 1 pm on Tuesday. His behaviour raised suspicion among students and guardians present on the premises, as he appeared visibly intoxicated and struggled to maintain his balance. "The way he was walking made it evident that he had consumed alcohol," said a teacher on condition of anonymity. Video footage from the school showed Mahato speaking incoherently. Soon after, the guardians informed the Kudwa Chainpur police station. Acting swiftly, police reached the school and arrested the headmaster on the spot.
