Hand grenade found near Bharat-Nepal Maitripul in Raxaul
BETTIAH, June 26 -- Amid the frequent arrests of foreign nationals following 'Operation Sindoor', a wave of fear swept through Raxaul town after the seizure of a hand grenade near the famous Bharat-Nepal Maitri Pul in East Champaran on Wednesday.
According to officials, jawans of the 47th battalion deployed along the Indo-Nepal border at Raxaul took custody of the explosive from children who had stumbled upon it on the bank of the Sariswa river near the Bharat-Nepal Maitri Pul-one of the main arteries linking New Delhi and Kathmandu-about 204 km north of Patna.
"The source of the hand grenade is being investigated. Necessary action will be taken," said Harkishore Rai, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Champaran range.
The recovery of the explosive, from beneath the bridge barely a few metres from the Indian Consulate and the Immigration Department's office-both under joint surveillance of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), Customs, and Nepal Police-has raised serious concerns.
"It is a matter of concern for the future. It is up to the security forces to unearth the truth and arrest those involved," said Mahesh Agarwal, the state coordinator of Seem Jagaran Manch.
Meanwhile, security along the border has been tightened. Authorities are probing how the hand grenade was brought to the area undetected.
"A bomb disposal team is on its way to the spot, and a dog squad has been pressed into service," said Dhirendra Kumar, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Raxaul.
Raxaul, located along the porous Indo-Nepal border, has been in the spotlight since 'Operation Sindoor'. Six foreign nationals, including five Chinese and one Iraqi, have been arrested recently.
On May 7, four Chinese nationals-He Qiangsheng, Huang Limin, Li Yonghai, and Deng Yijum, all residents of Hunan, China-were arrested in Raxaul. Another Chinese national, Hi Zeshi, was arrested on June 3....
