Grand Alliance seat-sharing process begins
PATNA, June 13 -- All the six constituents of the opposition INDIA bloc in Bihar are now set for finalisation of seat-sharing formula for the upcoming Bihar assembly polls. In a major decision taken on Thursday, the bloc partners have begun to vet lists prepared by each constituent through a coordination committee to agree on allocation of seats for each.
The seat-sharing is likely to be finalised in coming weeks.
The INDIA (Indian National Democratic Inclusive Alliance) in Bihar comprises six parties -- RJD, Congress, CPI-ML(liberation), CPI, CPM and Vikasheel Insaan Party (VIP). Each party has submitted is list of maximum candidates it seeks to field in the polls.
During the course of the meeting of coordination committee and sub committees formed by the bloc for the upcoming state assembly polls at the official residence of opposition leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, several key decisions were taken.
Sources said that the coordination committee, which is led by Tejashwi as its chairman, decided that the seat sharing arrangement in the bloc would be formalised in coming months after all the six constituents submit a list of seats each of the parties want to contest based on their party's electoral strength.
"All the six parties have agreed to prepare a list of seats they want to put candidates and also number of seats they want to be allotted in a seat sharing arrangement in the coalition. The parties would submit the list to the chairman of the coordination committee and subsequently discussions on a formal seat arrangement would be made," said a senior INDIA bloc leader, who was present at the meeting.
The formal initiation of the seat-sharing process in the INDIA bloc or Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) comes amid reports of several constituents of the bloc already making their intent clear of pitching for higher number of seats in seat adjustment. While the RJD, being the senior ally, is keen on fighting 150 plus seats, the other allies like Congress, left and VIP are not in any mood to settle for less number of seats either, sources said. There are indications, the CPI-ML(liberation), a major left constituent in the bloc, is eyeing for 40-45 seats based on the party's good performance in the 2024 parliamentary polls and 2020 assembly polls.
"We are eyeing about 40-45 plus seats. Already we have 19 seats where we had put candidates in 2020 assembly polls. Now, we are also identifying seats which are winnable in other parts of the state. Our party will submit our choice seats soon," said ML state secretary Kunal, who was participant in today's coordination committee meeting.
Another key decision taken at today meeting is that the INDIA bloc constituents would be supporting the nationwide strike given by trade unions against four proposed labour codes, sources said. The coordination committee also laid stress on regular meeting among sub-committees formed at the district and block level of the coalition partners in coming days so that workers of all six parties can work in tandem during the election campaign and polling days during the forthcoming assembly polls.
"It has stressed that all the five committees of the bloc and sub-committees formed at the district and bloc level would hold regular meetings and prepare a common strategy for the polls," said RJD state spokesperson Chittaranjan Gagan.
Incidentally, the GA top leaders remained evasive on the query as to who would be the chief ministerial face of the INDIA bloc for the forthcoming polls. The six party opposition coalition have not formally declared any CM face so far even though the bloc had appointed Tejashwi as the chairman of the coordination committee a few months back, signalling that the 35- year old Yadav scion is the face of the opposition bloc....
