Haridwar, June 10 -- The state government's Mobile Veterinary unit (MVU) -1962, an on-wheel service to treat injured animals, has provided medical treatment to over 280,000 ill and injured animals so far, an official monitoring the service said on Monday, adding that it has been a huge success especially in hilly terrain and far-flung rural plain areas. "This service has been a boon for the livestock farmers and animals in need of medical care, as it reaches out to the doorstep of cattles and animals," said Ashish Negi, in-charge of the unit. Launched in November 2022 by the animal husbandry department under the public-private partnership, the mobile veterinary service is now operating across the six districts of Kumaon and seven districts falling in Garhwal division. According to the 1962 service centre data, a total of 284,706 animals have been treated by the MVU-1962 till May 31. "In 13 districts across Kumaon and Garhwal division, a total of 60 MVU-1962 vans are providing services round the clock with a dedicated team of over 200 doctors and sub-staff. A well equipped call centre has been set up in Dehradun. When someone calls at the helpline - 1962 - the information is given to the respective nearest mobile van about the callers location, and animal's condition," Negi said. He further said that this service has evoked good response particularly in hilly terrain and far-flung rural plain areas as physical veterinary doctors or veterinary centres are not easily accessible or nearby. Recently, animal husbandry cabinet minister Saurabh Bahuguna lauded this service for bringing animal care to the doorsteps of farmers, especially during emergencies and adverse weather conditions....
