Govt prepared to tackle flood: Min
PATNA, Aug. 7 -- Due to heavy and continuous rainfall in Bihar, several rivers, including the Ganga, Sone and Kosi, are flowing above the danger level, resulting in flooding of low-lying residential areas.
The state administration has put district administrations on alert as .166 million cusecs water was discharged from Kosi Barrage on Wednesday.
Water resource department minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary said the department was continuously monitoring the situation of Varanasi, Prayagraj (Allahabad) and other upstream sites. According to the available information, the water level of Ganga is likely to decrease gradually from Thursday onwards. However, the department is fully prepared for any emergency situation. All engineers, technical teams and district level officers are working on alert mode.
He said the water resources department and the government of Bihar were vigilant.
"If a flood situation arises, advance preparations have been made for disaster relief operations. Continuous monitoring of embankments, necessary repair work, patrolling and availability of relief material is being ensured," he added.
The top priority of the state government was the safety and protection of lives of citizens, and with this goal the department was working with full dedication and promptness, he added.
Day-to-day activities of residents in Maner and Danapur in the state capital have been affected due to the overflow of Ganga, which has caused severe waterlogging and completely crippled life.
The Danapur administration is actively monitoring the situation while undertaking relief and rescue operations.
Subdivision officer Divya Shakti said boats had been arranged to evacuate residents from affected homes.
"We are monitoring the rising water level and we have prepared the basic facilities in all the relief centres. Boats have been arranged for the people who want to move out of their homes," Divya Shakti said.
"Gandhi Park in Maner has been marked for cattle and fodder is also being provided... There is no report of water entering the villages... We are in contact with the public representatives of Danapur," she added....
