PATNA, May 29 -- The luscious Dudhiya Malda variety of mangoes, which is popular in Patna and neighbouring districts in Bihar, is soon likely to get a geographical indication (GI) tag, as per officials of the state agriculture department. Secretary, agriculture department, Sanjay Kumar Agarwal, said that the process for getting the GI tag for the unique variety of Dudhiya Malda mangoes were in advanced stage with saplings of the fruit being planted in different areas around Patna and other districts. "The documentation processes for getting the GI tag of the Dudhiya Malda mangoes is over and process is on. We are hopeful the GI tag would come soon. It would help in making the unique variety of mangoes more popular and also help in its production growth," said the secretary. Officials said around 6,000 saplings of the plant have been made and it would be sold for its plantation in around Patna and other adjoining districts for higher production of the Dudhiya Malda mangoes in coming years. "The target is to have its production in 60 hectares of land with one hectare covering around 100 saplings of the dudhiya mango variety," said a state agriculture official. The GI tag would also help the Dudhiya mangoes to get better market across the country and also help it in exports, officials said. The Dudhiya Malda variety of mangoes have been grown in Patna's Digha area for several decades but its production has come down owing to the area transforming as an urban hub in last many years with apartments and commercial complexes coming up in the area, officials said. Meanwhile, the state agriculture department will launch Vikshit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan on Thursday to give farmers all help in doing farming in a more scientific manner and also popularise organic farming in the state . Agriculture secretary, Agarwal said that the campaign would help the farmers to get more knowledge of various technical advances made in the farming sector and also processes involved in organic farming. "Our experts would be visiting the villages across the state as part of the campaign to interact with farmers and educate them about the new farming techniques, farm equipment, scientific farming and various schemes in the farm sector. This would help the farmers to improve their farming techniques in the coming kharif season beginning July," said the secretary. Under the campaign, an initiative by the ministry of agriculture, estimated 1.5 crore farmers in Bihar would be benefitted , officials said. The campaign would be coordinated by ICAR ( Indian Council of Agricultural Research), KVK ( Krishi Vighyan Kendra) , Agricultural Technology Application Research Institutes( ATARI) and state agriculture university( SAU), officials said.
