PATNA, May 25 -- A notorious gangster carrying a reward of Rs.25,000 on his head and accused of opening fire on a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) was killed in an encounter early on Saturday morning by a joint team of the Bihar Special Task Force (STF) and Naugachhia police, officials said.
The encounter took place around 3 a.m. near the Murli-Soneya riverine belt under the jurisdiction of Rangra police station. The gangster, identified as Gurudeo Mandal alias Fufa, a resident of Naugachhia police district, was wanted in over 15 criminal cases registered at various police stations in Purnia, Katihar, and Bhagalpur districts.
According to police, Gurudeo-also known by the aliases Sanoj, Prakash, and Jasmeet-was holding a meeting with seven associates in the riverine area when the police closed in on them. When the police team asked them to surrender, Gurudeo opened fire, prompting retaliatory firing. He was injured in the exchange, while his accomplices managed to flee.
Inspector General (IG) of Bhagalpur range Vivek Kumar confirmed the incident, stating that Gurudeo was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment but succumbed to his injuries. A forensic science laboratory (FSL) team was also sent to the site to collect evidence.
Police recovered a country-made carbine and a pistol from the spot.
Notably, on June 3, 2022, Gurudeo had been arrested following a gun battle between the police and his gang....
