GA seat formula faces hurdle as RJD eyes 140
PATNA, Sept. 28 -- Though the seat-sharing arrangement in the Opposition INDIA bloc in Bihar or Grand Alliance (GA) has progressed in last few days, there are indications a final deal may take some time to be stitched as allies mainly the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Congress and Left parties are still to come on the same page over ratio of seats to be contested with certain hitches on adjustment of seats, people familiar with the matter in the GA said.
Insiders in the GA said that the RJD, being the senior most constituent in the coalition in Bihar for long, is firm on its stance of contesting at least 140 seats as against 144 seats contested in 2020 assembly polls and wants the Congress to contest around 50 seats, taking the total number of seats to be shared among two major allies to 190 out of 243 seats and the rest should be allotted to other partners.
In rest 53 seats, the other allies like Vikasheel Insaan Party (VIP) led by Mukesh Sahani, Left parties including CPI-ML (liberation) and new entrants in the coalition like Jharkhand Mukhti Morcha (JMM) and Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party (RLJP) could be adjusted, people familiar with the matter said.
"The RJD is strongly in favour of contesting 140 seats this time. It is important for the party's own identity as the major Opposition party in Bihar. Other parties have to sacrifice more though we are in favour of giving up a united fight to defeat the BJP-JD(U)-led NDA government," said a RJD leader in the know of the matter.
He said that in recent talks, the Congress has been asked to concede around 20 seats and contest 50-52 seats so that other allies could be adjusted reasonably.
There are indications, the RJD is also keen on giving VIP 15 seats while CPI-ML(liberation) may get around 25-26 seats as against 19 seats contested by the major Left party in 2020 polls.
Insiders said that the RJD may also put some of its own candidates on VIP poll symbol if any fruitful agreement is reached.
"There is also a proposal that out of 15 seats to be offered to VIP, there could be four to five candidates from the RJD who would fight on the VIP symbol. Of course, CPI-ML (liberation) may get 25 seats based on its performance in the last few polls," said another GA insider.
However, the Congress leaders claimed that the coalition bloc had not made any agreement so far on the ratio of the seats.
Party insiders said that a panel of three names would discuss allocation of 70 seats, where the party had contested in 2020 polls, at an internal meeting in New Delhi tomorrow.
Congress insiders said that the party may concede ten seats at the maximum for seat adjustment among allies in the bloc but would not accept a proposal of contesting around 50-52 seats.
"Talks are still going on. We had contested 70 seats in the last election. It should be understood that as the INDIA bloc coalition has expanded with many new allies coming on board, all major allies have to sacrifice seats so that smaller allies could be adjusted. The sacrifice of seats to be done by any ally should be proportionate," said Shakeel Ahamad Khan, Congress legislature party leader in the state assembly, hinting that his party was not in mood to play second fiddle on seat adjustments....
