Four escaped prisoners from Nepal held by SSB personnel
Haldwani/Pithoragarh, Sept. 15 -- The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) have arrested four escaped prisoners from Nepal while they were attempting to enter Indian territory through the Kali river near Devtal in Pithoragarh district, an official statement from SSB said on Sunday.
According to the statement, jawans of the 55th Battalion of SSB patrol spotted the four men while they were trying to cross the river on a makeshift rubber raft on Saturday.
The men were arrested and their identities confirmed, the statement added.
The men were identified as Dharmendra Chandra, 26, Tarkaram Luhar, 22, ,Suraj Saud, 24, and Aashiq Pahari, 31, it said.
SSB officials said the men had planned to use India as a safe passage to evade authorities and travel further inland.
The prisoners are currently in the custody of SSB and are being interrogated in the presence of local police to determine whether they had any support networks or intended hideouts in India. SSB confirmed that the Nepal government has been notified and the fugitives will be handed over once the formal procedures are complete.
Uttarakhand shares approximately 345 km of international border with Nepal, running mainly along the Kali (Sharda) river and covering three districts - Pithoragarh, Champawat and Udham Singh Nagar.
