DARBHANGA, Aug. 29 -- Abusive language used against Prime Minister Narendra Modi purportedly from a stage erected as part of ongoing Rahul Gandhi-led Voter Adhikar Yatra in Bithauli village of Simri block in Darbhanga district on Thursday stirred a political storm in poll-bound Bihar. The 33-second video of the episode, whose authenticity is not validated by HT, surfaced and was widely circulated on social media. It shows a crowded stage with someone mouthing from mic "abuses" targeted at PM Modi, while others jostled to snatch mic from him. Rahul Gandhi, or any other prominent leader from the Opposition, is not visible in the video. One local leader, Mohammed Naushad, is said to be the organiser of the event and he later accepted the use of abusive language and also apologised for it. Meanwhile, a case was registered by a BJP worker Krishna Kumar 'Kallu' at the Kotwali police station in Patna against the disrespectful remark against the PM, naming Naushad. This was confirmed by Kotwali SHO Janmjay Kumar. As the uproar surged, Naushad issued an apology, stressing that he was not present when the remarks were made. "The Prime Minister is also the Prime Minister of all countrymen, and I have never engaged in such cheap and lowly acts in my two decades in the party," he said. Naushad explained that when Rahul Gandhi arrived, he had gone with the convoy to Muzaffarpur, and in his absence a minor managed to climb onto the stage and used foul language. "This could also be the handiwork of an opponent," he said. BJP leaders reacted very strongly as soon as the word about "abusive language" used against the PM from a Congress platform spread. The party accused Rahul Gandhi of "permitting indecency from his platform" and demanded unconditional apologies from both him and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, who is accompanying him in the yatra. In a strongly worded post on X, the BJP said: "From the stage of Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav's yatra, extremely abusive language was used against Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji's late mother. Such depravity has never been seen before in politics. This yatra has crossed every limit of insult, hatred, and indecency." The party added that the episode was an "unpardonable misdeed" that could not be erased even by repeated apologies. Later, a number of BJP leaders from across the country condemned the remarks and sought apology from Rahul. Union minister of state for home affairs Nityanand Rai, himself a leader from the state, also denounced the incident, asserting that Bihar and the nation would not tolerate derogatory remarks against the Prime Minister. Speaking in Patna, he accused Gandhi of failing in his role as Leader of Opposition by not condemning the abuse and charged both Gandhi and Tejashwi with turning the yatra into "a platform of insults." Other constituents of the NDA have also come out condemning use of disrespectful language against the PM. "The Opposition is playing with language dignity and losing control over language far too frequently. This is unacceptable. Earlier they cried over Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) and now they are crying over SIR. Congress wants to push the nation towards anarchy, but that Narendra Modi will never let happen. If the leader does not maintain the sanctity of words, the workers will also do the same," said LJP chief and union minister Chirag Paswan. JD(U) working president Sanjay Jha, reacting to constant use of vitriol by Rahul Gandhi against PM and the ECI, said that it was unfortunate to see a leader of Opposition stoop so low for a few captive cheers from the hangers-on and setting a wrong example for his party workers and supporters. Taking cognisance of "disrespectful remark against Narendra Modi's mother", Bihar state women's commission also condemned it, "saying disrespect of any woman is not acceptable"....
