Forensic report confirms priest of Gaya temple was killed due to slow poisoning
GAYA JI, Sept. 3 -- A Patna Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) report has cracked the two-year-old mystery surrounding the death of 80-year-old Ram temple priest Shivratan Mishra in Gaya, police said on Tuesday.
The viscera report confirmed that Mishra, the priest of the Ram temple at Sherghati, died of slow poisoning. He was found dead at the house of his elder son, Pawan Mishra, on July 13, 2023, said Sherghati Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) and Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shailendra Singh.
Following the death, Mishra's younger son, Deepak Mishra, lodged a case of murder against Pawan Mishra, his wife Manju, and their son Bholu. He alleged that the accused forcibly kept the ailing priest in their house, denying other family members access to him, with the intention of usurping his property.
Although Mishra had stepped down from performing temple rituals due to old age and ill health, he retained control over certain temple property and donations. Police said the accused managed to transfer some property into Manju Mishra's name before allegedly killing the priest through poisoning.
Since no external injuries were found and the cause of death could not be determined during the post-mortem examination, the viscera were preserved and sent to Patna FSL. The report, received on Monday, revealed traces of Etorphine Hydrochloride, a powerful opioid used in veterinary medicine to immobilise large animals like elephants and rhinos....
