PATNA, July 24 -- Residents of low-lying areas along the courses of all major rivers, including the Ganga, Kosi, Burhi Gandak, and Dardha, are facing a worsening flood-like situation as water levels have surged past danger marks across multiple districts. Heavy monsoon rains, combined with significant water discharge from upstream catchments in Nepal, have exacerbated the crisis - affecting millions and causing widespread damage to homes, infrastructure, and agricultural land. The situation remains critical, with authorities on high alert and emergency measures in place to mitigate further devastation. In Bhagalpur, the Ganga is flowing 24 cm above the danger level at Azmabad with a steady trend. At Kahalgaon, the river is at 31.33 meters, 24 cm above the danger level of 31.09 meters. In Patna, the Ganga has breached the danger mark at multiple locations - Gandhi Ghat (66 cm above), Digha Ghat (3 cm), and Hathidah Ghat (45 cm) - flooding several villages in the Diara region. In Supaul district, the Kosi is flowing at 74.98 meters at Birpur, 28 cm above its danger level of 74.7 meters, also showing a steady trend. In Khagaria, the Kosi is 1.15 meters above the danger mark at Baltara and 84 cm above at Kursela, leading to riverbank erosion and inundation of villages in Beldaur block. The Burhi Gandak has crossed the danger mark in Khagaria by 95 cm, contributing to widespread flooding. Other rivers such as the Gandak, Punpun, Sone, and Dardha have also surpassed their danger levels at various locations. The Bagmati is 1.5 meters above danger level at Santosh Jaldwar in Khagaria. The Mahananda is 100 cm above at Dhengra Ghat in Purnea and 9 cm above in Jhawa, Katihar. The Kamla Balan is flowing 105 cm above the danger level at Jhanjharpur in Madhubani. In Bhagalpur, rising waters of the Ganga have displaced residents to temporary shelters on embankments, while in Bhojpur, floodwaters have inundated Diara regions, disrupting connectivity and damaging homes. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of the Kosi, Gandak, Mahananda, and other rivers - particularly in North Bihar and Nepal - raising concerns of a further rise in water levels.
