Five killed as heavy rain continues to lash Raj
Jaipur/Kota/Barmer, July 15 -- Heavy rainfall across Rajasthan has thrown normal life out of gear, claiming lives, disrupting transport, and damaging infrastructure in multiple districts. With flood-like conditions reported in several parts of the state, schools have been shut, train routes diverted, and emergency response teams pressed into action, officials aware of the matter said on Monday.
In Pali, a man was electrocuted while navigating waterlogged streets as two days of continuous downpour have turned roads into rivers, inundated homes and shops. The district administration declared a holiday for all government and private schools, including Kendriya Vidyalaya, as a precautionary measure. Railway tracks and underpasses in the areas such as Sarvodaya Nagar have been completely submerged.
Pali district collector LN Mantri and superintendent of police Chunararam Jat have inspected the worst-hit areas. "Nearly 7 inches of rainfall has been recorded so far. Drainage teams have been activated, and all officials have been instructed to stay on the field," said Mantri.
In Jodhpur, floodwaters entered the railway station, leading to major disruptions. Two train routes - Jodhpur-Sabarmati Express and Jaisalmer-Kathgodam Express - were diverted due to submerged tracks in the Pali Marwar Yard.
Elsewhere in the state, the impact of heavy rains continues to intensify. In Dholpur, a youth was swept away by the overflowing Bamani river, while in Bharatpur, another man was killed by lightning.
In Chittorgarh, a child died after being washed away in an open drain.
In Rajsamand, two cars were swept away by strong currents.
Jaipur reported a road cave-in due to severe waterlogging, and in Kota, floodwaters entered schools, hospitals, and homes in low-lying areas such as Lakhawa and Retya Chowki.
In response, the authorities have opened nine gates of the Kota Barrage to manage the rising water levels.
In Bhilwara's Bijolia, two youths were swept away, while crossing a swollen culvert but were rescued safely after a 90-minute operation by the civil defence team.
