Farmers' stir at Roorkee toll plaza enters fourth day
Haridwar, Aug. 25 -- The farmers' agitation at Bahadarabad toll plaza on the Roorkee-Haridwar National Highway entered its fourth consecutive day on Sunday, with leaders from various unions announcing plans to convene a mega-meeting soon to intensify their protest.
The sit-in, spearheaded by the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU Tikait), has gained momentum as representatives of several other unions, including BKU (Bhanu), BKU (Bedi), BKU (Sangram) and the Bharatiya Kisan Union Welfare Foundation joined hands with the protesters. Farmer leaders said they were also drawing support from neighbouring states such as Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and the National Capital Region.
The agitation, which began after police allegedly used force to stop farmers from marching to Dehradun on August 21, is centred around a six-point charter of demands. These include opposition to the installation of smart electronic meters, waiver of electricity bills for irrigation, a substantial hike in minimum support prices for crops, consolidation of fragmented farmland in hill districts, measures to protect crops from wild animals and action against police officials responsible for halting the protest march.
BKU (Tikait) national spokesperson Rakesh Tikait, who visited the toll plaza on Friday evening, urged farmers to continue the agitation until a written assurance on their demands was given. "Farmers were moving peacefully towards Dehradun for a pre-announced protest. Using force against them is unacceptable. The government must act on our issues," Tikait said.
A BKU (Tikait) member said that preparations to convene a Maha-panchayat in Haridwar in the coming days were on. "The gathering will aim to strengthen the agitation and pressuring the BJP-led state government to concede to our demands," he said....
