AURANGABAD, Aug. 31 -- After a prisoner died in Aurangabad jail on Saturday, his family members and supporters blocked the main road, alleging that he had succumbed to injuries inflicted by excise officials. The deceased was identified as Dharmendra Ram (37), a resident of Urdina village under Barun police station. He had been arrested by excise officials on Thursday with six litres of liquor and sent to the Aurangabad divisional jail. Jail superintendent Deepak Kumar said that Ram's health deteriorated suddenly on Saturday morning. He was rushed to Sadar Hospital, where he died during treatment in the presence of his family members. However, Ram's wife Sanju Devi and his uncle Rampati Ram, a representative of Kutumba MLA Rajesh Kumar, alleged that he had been falsely implicated. "He lived in Delhi and had come home 15 days ago. He was brutally beaten at the excise office in Padrava and later died of his injuries in jail," they said. Demanding action against the officials and compensation, the protesters blocked Ramesh Chowk with the body. They also clashed with police when Town Station House Officer (SHO) Upendra Kumar Singh tried to clear the blockade. The protest was lifted after Sub-divisonal Police Officer (SDPO) Sanjay Kumar Pandey and Sub-divisional Magistrate (SDM) Santan Singh assured action, and the body was sent for postmortem. Police said an unnatural death case has been registered and the autopsy was conducted in line with NHRC guidelines....
