Ex-RJD leader, three other drug smugglers held in East Champaran
BETTIAH, May 21 -- In a major swoop on drugs peddlers, East Champaran police arrested four inter-state smugglers, including a Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader, and seized narcotics from two places early this week, police said on Monday evening.
Police further said that the smugglers, identified as Shambhu Gupta, Naresh Sah and Sompal Kumar, were arrested by the Kotwa police in coordination with special task force (STF) with opium from Kotwa in East Champaran on Sunday.
The seizure included 4.074 kilograms of opium, Rs.56,000 in cash, and six mobile phones.
Naresh Sah, a resident of Banka district, had earlier served an 11-year prison sentence under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh.
Shambhu Gupta, a native of East Champaran district, is an accused in three cases related to the NDPS Act and an abduction case, including one registered in Jharkhand.
Interestingly, Gupta had also served as the district president of the Extremely Backward Cell of the RJD's East Champaran unit. "He was expelled from the party some time ago," said Manoj Yadav, RJD leader and MLA from Kalyanpur.
In a separate development, police on Tuesday arrested Vijay Das, a notorious narcotics smuggler carrying a reward of Rs.25,000 on his head, while he was attempting to flee to Nepal....
