Elephants kill student, injure man, forest dept installs AI-based cams
Jamshedpur, March 10 -- A 21-yr-old youth - a student of Baheragora ITI - was trampled to death by a stray elephant while he was returning to his native village Marotoliya under Balijuri panchayat in Gudabandha Block of East Singhbhum district in Jharkhand, officials said, even as the Jamshedpur forest division started working on installing AI-based thermal cameras in Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary (DWS) and Chakulia forest range to minimise elephant-human conflicts.
In another incident, a 50-yr-old man was seriously injured by another elephant near Yuktidih-chekam under Ghatshila Block of East Singhbhum.
"A youth was killed in elephant attack in Gudabandha Block while a man was injured in another elephant attack in Ghatshila Block. The incidents of elephant-human conflict will come down after we install AI-based thermal cameras," Saba Alam Ansari, Jamshedpur divisional forest officer (DFO), said on Monday.
Ansari, who is also the DFO of Dalma, said they had procured 80 most modern cameras from Sweden. "We have started installing these cameras in Dalma as well as in Chakulia and Ghatshila forest ranges. The cameras will instantly track elephant movements in the vicinity and send alerts. This will help us in alerting villagers and take quick responsive actions," he said....
