EE, cashier get jail for bribery
PATNA, Dec. 16 -- Special vigilance judge of Patna, Mohammad Rushtam has convicted RCD executive engineer Suresh Prasad Singh and cashier Shashi Bhushan Kumar, in a trap case and sentenced them to four years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs.5 lakh and Rs.2 lakh respectively. Judgment of the case was delivered on Monday and was registered by the vigilance investigation bureau (VIB) on June 8, 2019, following a complaint from Akhilesh Kumar Jaiswal.
Kishore Kumar Singh, in-charge special public prosecutor of vigilance court, said the VIB arrested the then road construction department executive engineer Suresh Prasad Singh (56) and cashier Shashi Bhushan Kumar while allegedly accepting Rs.14 lakh as bribe from contractor Akhilesh Kumar Jaiswal. The trap amount is one of the biggest in the recent past.
Shashi Bhusan Kumar also convicted under Section of 12 of Prevention of Corruption Act, got three-years-RI and fine of Rs.1 lakh. Both sentences/punishments will run concurrently.
After the trap, VIB raided Singh's house in West Patel Nagar under Shastri Nagar police station and recovered Rs.2.36 crore in cash kept in two suitcases and travel bags. Deeds of five flats and one private residence in Patna, one flat in Noida, agreement papers for 14 kattha land at Bihta and 26 policy papers of life insurance were recovered from his three-storey bungalow worth crores. Two SUVs - a Renault Duster and Mahindra Scorpio - were also recovered from his residence. "Singh was posted as RCD executive engineer of western Patna and had demanded 1% commission from Jaiswal against the contract of Rs.44 crore. Jaiswal works as contractor for Saz Infracon Project Private Limited. The company has been engaged for widening and repairing roads between Bikram and Bihta via Amhara and Gonwa. On Jaiswal's request, he had agreed on 0.8%, which is Rs.32 lakh," he said....
