EC scans poll readiness, pushes for higher voting
PATNA, May 17 -- Higher enrolment of youth voters in the age group of 18-19 , taking steps for increasing the poll percentage and also maintaining highest transparency in conduct of the forthcoming assembly polls in Bihar were among the major points outlined by the Election Commissioner (EC), Vivek Joshi, during a high level review meeting on poll preparedness with state election department officials and top police brass on Friday.
Joshi, who is on a four-day visit to the state to review poll preparedness ahead of the assembly polls scheduled in October-November this year, laid stress that measures should be taken for increasing the poll percentage in Bihar, which has hovered between 56%-57%. A press release by the state election department said the EC expressed concern that Bihar's poll percentage in 2024 parliamentary polls stood at 56.28% whereas the national poll percentage was 66.10%.
Chief Electoral officer, Bihar, Vinod Singh Gunjiyal, ADG ( headquarter) and state nodal police officer, Kundan Krishnan, district magistrate and district election officer, Chandrashekar Singh and SSP, Patna were prominently present at the meeting. "A comprehensive strategy should be developed for implementation at the micro level to enhance the poll percentage in Bihar and it would be reviewed regularly by the Election Commission of India (ECI)," said the EC during the meeting , as per the press release.
The EC also laid emphasis on higher enrolment of youth voters especially in the age group of 18-19 , stating that the number of enlisted voters in the age group were low compared to the total population of the youths in the same age group.
The review meeting also had the agenda of law and order, higher transparency in conduct of polls, providing basic amenities at the polling stations, strong system for redressal of complaints and also free and fair conduct of polls. Stress was also laid on sanitising the electoral rolls with participation of booth level officers, booth level agents of political parties and district election officers. The EC also directed the officials to take appropriate steps for higher participation of PwD (persons with disabilities) and those above the age of 85.
The EC is scheduled to visit Motihari on Saturday to inspect the first level checking of EVMs and hold review meeting with DM, West Champaran. On Sunday, Joshi is scheduled to visit Valmiki Nagar and meeting SSB personnel....
