Dhami seeks action report on religious conversion
Dehradun, May 23 -- Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Thursday directed the officials, including of police department to submit a detailed report of the action taken in cases related to religious conversion in the state.
According to officials familiar with the matter, the chief minister directed the officials to run a continuous campaign against corruption and widely publicise toll free number 1064.
"A detailed report of the action taken in cases related to religious conversions should be submitted. Along with continuing the verification campaign in all the districts, immediate and strict action should be ensured on receiving information about suspicious activity or person," Dhami said while chairing a meeting with the senior officials at his official residence.
In November 2022, the state assembly had passed an amendment bill "Uttarakhand Freedom of Religion (Amendment) Act 2022" to strengthen the anti-conversion law in the state. In the same month, Dhami termed religious conversion as "nasoor" (canker) for the state while explaining why his government decided to introduce stricter provisions in the anti-conversion law.
The changes in law made unlawful conversions a cognisable and non-bailable offence in the state punishable with a prison term of up to 10 years.
During the meeting on Thursday, the CM also issued strict instructions to the officers that while making Aadhaar Card and other government documents, they should be properly verified.
"Strict action should be taken against those issuing wrong documents. The ongoing campaign against encroachments should be continued. It should be ensured that the land which has been freed from encroachments should not be encroached again. A detailed assessment of encroachment on Enemy Properties should also be done and its information should be presented," he said.
Dhami also directed the officers that along with giving priority to local workers in the construction work of government buildings, the cultural identity of the state and traditional hill architecture should be given prominence in the construction of buildings. He instructed the officers to strengthen the security system in the border areas and conduct intensive checking campaigns. In April this year, Dhami had directed the police department to launch a comprehensive drive in coordination with the district administration to take strict and immediate action against foreign nationals residing illegally in Uttarakhand using fake documents such as forged Aadhaar cards....
