PATNA, Aug. 5 -- CPI (ML) MLA from Arwal, Mahanand Singh, said to be an absconder in a 24-year-old case, on Monday surrendered before the Jehanabad civil court in connection with obstructing government work and was sent to the judicial custody. The MLA surrendered before the court of sub-divisional judicial magistrate Anish Kumar who sent him to judicial custody. An FIR was registered against him in 2001 with Town police station of Jehanabad on the charges of road blockade, staged protests in favour of the arrest of party general secretary Deepankar Bhattacharya in Jharkhand. After obtaining bail from the court, the MLA never appeared in the court despite court issued summons, bailable warrant, non-bailable warrant even issued properties attachment warrant. In 2022, the court declared him absconder. On Monday, MLA's lawyer filed a bail application in the Jehanabad Court, which was rejected and he was ordered to be sent to judicial custody for two or three days. According to his lawyer, in the FIR, the accused name was mentioned as Mahanand Sharma, while the MLA's writes his name as Mahanand Singh, therefore, he did not take notice of the matter.
