Cops lathicharge farmers seeking fertiliser, many protesters injured
BETTIAH, Aug. 19 -- Woes of farmers waiting for their turn in long queues to procure urea compounded after the police reportedly rained lathi blows on them at Bagaha in Bihar's West Champaran district on Monday, leaving some of them injured.
According to farmers, they suffered the blows rained by policemen when they were standing in a queue for their turn to procure urea from an outlet near block office Bagaha 2 in West Champaran on Monday.
"I have been visiting BISCOMAUN in search of fertiliser for three days in a row. In videos emerging from Bagaha, a large number of farmers are seen vying with each other to reach the counter. At that, a police constable standing near the window started raining lathis on farmers, prompting them to take to heels.
When contacted and asked about the farmers' allegations of lathi blows on them, Sarfraz Asgar, district agriculture officer (DAO), West Champaran said, "The situation was threatening to run out of control for a few minutes. But it was brought under control," he said, adding, "There are around 1,000 bags of fertilisers available. There is nothing to panic about."...
