Congress demands CBI probe in irregularities in Everest land lease
Dehradun, Sept. 19 -- A delegation from the Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee (UKPCC) on Thursday submitted a memorandum to governor Lieutenant General (Retd.) Gurmeet Singh, detailing their allegations of irregularities in the lease of land in the George Everest Estate in Mussoorie to Patanjali co-founder Acharya Balkrishna by the state government.
"We demand the state government to revoke the George Everest land allocation order and a CBI probe into the deal under the supervision of a sitting high court judge," said former chief minister and senior Congress leader Harish Rawat, who led the delegation.
The memorandum alleged that 172 acres of prime land worth around Rs.30,000 crore was handed over to a company owned by Balkrishna for an annual fee of only Rs.1 crore. This amounted to "large-scale corruption", as per the memorandum, which also alleged irregularities in the tendering process.
The UKPCC further alleged that 200-year-old routes traditionally used by local residents had been blocked by the company and arbitrary charges were being levied on tourists.
On Sunday, the Congress staged a statewide protest over the issue.
Reacting to the allegations, state BJP media in-charge Manveer Singh Chauhan said the site was allotted for tourism activities following proper legal procedure, and there was no restriction on public movement around the park. "The Congress charges are a bundle of lies.....completely detached from facts," he said....
