Cong sanitary pad handout sparks row
PATNA, July 5 -- Congress' party's move to distribute sanitary napkins with photo of Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on its wrap has stirred a row, with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) taking exception to free distribution of such packets among girls and women.
As part of the state wide campaign announced by the All India Mahila Congress (AIMC) president Alka Lamba, Bihar Pradesh Congress Party (BPCC) president Rajesh Kumar on Friday formally launched free distribution of sanitary pads at the party office.
Lamba was also present at the party office.
The drive is in sync with the party's bid to woo half of the population. Earlier, AIMC and Bihar Pradesh Mahila Congress (BPMC) have begun accepting filled-up forms from the prospective beneficiaries of Mai Bahan Samman Yojna, which entails payment of monthly stipend of Rs.2,500 to qualified women and girls, if Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc is voted to power.
"We intend to provide free sanitary napkins to all girls and women across the state", said the BPCC chief, who also displayed packets containing the free pads.
Taking strong exception to photographs of Rahul Gandhi on cover of sanitary napkins, JD(U) MLC and spokesman Neeraj Kumar alleged "the Congress seems to have taken a leaf out of the book of its ally RJD, which has been known for a lumpen style of politics".
He further added CM Nitish has been working relentlessly for women's empowerment and the results are for all to see, but the Congress has insulted the dignity of women.
BJP spokesman Kuntal Krishna also echoed in a similar vein, saying that the government in Bihar was doing everything that women required. "But the Congress, which is worried about its prospects in the upcoming assembly polls, has shown its ideological bankruptcy. The trait seems to have afflicted the party, in which sycophancy reigns supreme"....
