PATNA, July 12 -- The students of Patna Veterinary College, which is one of the well-known colleges in the state, on Friday staged a protest, went on an indefinite strike, demanding security after an alleged attack on student by an unknown person inside the campus. A case for the same was registered at the Airport police station against the unknown person and later police even detained a suspect. The injured student, identified as Mayank Kumar, was admitted to IGIMS Hospital after a gunshot injury to his hand on Thursday. His condition said to be stable. Several students gathered at the gate of one of the top colleges in the state capital on Friday morning, demanding that the security at the campus be beefed up. "Our first demand is that the culprits of Thursday evening's incident should be punished. Second, the college campus is open, and anyone enters the premises and passes comments on us. There is no safety; we have complained about it in writing several times. We want action. Till the time proper action is not taken, our strike will continue," said Sakshi, a student of the college. According to police, the incident took place at around 6 pm near the boys' hostel campus. Preliminary investigations suggest that Mayank had an altercation with some outsiders over playing cricket, which escalated, leading to a scuffle. During the scuffle, somebody fired and he was injured. A campus guard stated that the outsiders entered the college premises from the back gate without being noticed. Hearing the noise of a gunshot following an altercation, the guards reached the spot and found Mayank injured. "Police are reviewing CCTV footage to identify and arrest the accused involved in the incident. Efforts are underway to identify the outsiders who entered the campus and injured the student. Security arrangements will also be reviewed. We are making efforts to identify the attackers," said the SHO Amit Kumar, adding that police detained a suspect and were interrogating him. The suspect has been identified as Niyaz alias Gulab, who is preparing for the Bihar constable exam. The college administration has not yet issued a statement, but the incident raises serious questions about the security and monitoring systems within the campus, especially with ongoing student activities in open spaces. One of the college students said, "Many students of our college come and play here, they had a brawl with the locals on the campus. This keeps happening here every other day. So, we are observing an indefinite strike." "Our demands are simple: that our safety should be ensured. Our seniors work here in the OPD, and there are no security arrangements for them. The female students use these roads on a regular basis and there is no safety measure for them. Keeping all these issues, we are on an indefinite strike," said a second year student on condition of anonymity....
