Coalition conundrum hits GA, deal still hazy
PATNA, Oct. 13 -- Even as the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) announced its seat-sharing arrangement on Sunday evening, the picture of a final seat-sharing deal within the Opposition INDIA bloc in Bihar remained hazy. However, insiders in the bloc said that final talks to resolve glitches in seat allotments among allies - including RJD, Congress, and Vikasheel Insaan Party (VIP) - would be held in New Delhi and that a final formula may be agreed upon on Monday.
During the day, Opposition leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, along with his parents - RJD chief Lalu Prasad and former chief minister Rabri Devi - left for New Delhi, while VIP chief Mukesh Sahani departed for the national capital in the evening.
People familiar with the matter said Tejashwi is likely to hold talks with Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, on Monday, during which a final seat deal may be finalised.
On Monday, RJD chief Lalu Prasad, former CM Rabri Devi, and opposition leader Tejashwi are scheduled to appear before the Rouse Avenue Court, New Delhi, in connection with the hearing of the land-for-jobs corruption case.)
They said glitches in the seat-sharing deal had been resolved to a large extent, except for a few seats where RJD and Congress are not ready to compromise, such as Jale, Kahalgaon, Vaisali, and Ghosi. Differences also remain between RJD and CPI-ML (Liberation) over a few seats, including Digha and Paliganj, which were contested by the major left party in the 2020 polls.
Insiders in the Grand Alliance (GA) said there is friction over finalising the seat formula, as Congress is reluctant to accept RJD's offer of 50-55 seats and wants at least 60, while VIP is demanding more than 20 seats, and ML is insisting on 25 seats against an offer of 20. ML had contested 19 seats in the 2020 polls.
Congress leader and MP Akhilesh Prasad Singh said the seat-sharing deal would be finalised soon.
"In the next few days, an announcement will be made. Talks are ongoing, and all matters will be resolved shortly," Singh said before leaving for New Delhi.
On the other hand, VIP chief Mukesh Sahani, before leaving for New Delhi, told reporters about the delay in the seat-sharing arrangement: "It is right, there are some ailments in the Mahagathbandhan. but doctors are all in Delhi. hopefully, they will provide the right treatment."
He, however, expressed confidence that the deal would be concluded soon.
The statement was seen as Sahani's way of signaling that he remains unhappy with the proposed seat-sharing deal offered by RJD and Congress and wants the key allies to accommodate his demand for more seats.
People familiar with the matter said Sahani is also pressing the RJD-Congress combine to declare him as the deputy CM face of the INDIA bloc before the polls, a proposition that is not gaining traction, as Congress has remained non-committal on declaring Tejashwi as the Chief Ministerial face.
A senior RJD leader said, "When Tejashwi himself is not being declared as the CM face by the INDIA bloc, where is the question of declaring a deputy CM? These are issues still complicated and unresolved within the alliance."
Insiders in the GA said a final seat sharing deal may be announced by Monday evening or Tuesday after final talks between RJD, Congress and other constituents.
The Jharkhand Mukhti Morcha( JMM) too has given an ultimatum to the INDIA bloc leaders to finalise the seat sharing deal at the earliest, cautioning that the party may declare seats it would contest in case there is inordinate delay. "We want to contest as part of the INDIA bloc in Bihar. But if there is a big delay in seat sharing deal, we may have to take a call. We may declare seats where we would contest separately," said Manoj Pandey, spokesperson of JMM in Ranchi....
