The incident occurred during a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) rally, where Modi, alongside deputy chief minister Vijay Kumar Sinha-contesting from Lakhisarai-handed out ceremonial "soops," (bamboo basket used for Chhath Puja) coconuts and fruits to women from Bihar's Jeevika self-help groups. Videos shared by BJP's Bihar handle depict the act as a cultural tribute ahead of Chhath Puja, a major Hindu festival in Bihar celebrating the Sun God with fasting and riverbank offerings, starting tomorrow.
