Chaos mar Cong's poll review meet, workers come to blows
MADHUBANI, Jan. 7 -- A review meeting of the Bihar Congress descended into chaos on Tuesday after a clash broke out between two groups of party workers at the party office in Madhubani, exposing continued internal divisions following the party's poor performance in the recent assembly elections.
Senior leaders like state unit chief Rajesh Ram and Shakeel Ahmad Khan were present in the meeting when workers clashed.
In the 2025 polls, the Congress had contested only two seats in Madhubani districts -- Benipatti and Phulparas. It lost both, leading to widespread disappointment and anger among local workers.
The situation turned chaotic after heated arguments over the party's election strategy escalated into a physical brawl, with workers allegedly exchanging blows and using party flag sticks. The clash took place in the presence of state Congress president Rajesh Ram and senior party leader Shakeel Ahmad Khan, causing embarrassment to the party leadership.
According to party sources, tensions flared when rival groups accused each other of irregularities in ticket distribution during the recent assembly elections. Allegations of bias and mismanagement led to a shouting match, which soon spiralled out of control. Chairs were broken and party flags were reportedly used during the scuffle as workers lunged at each other, forcing others present to intervene in an attempt to restore order.
Senior leaders tried to pacify the agitated workers, but their efforts failed as the fighting continued. Police later reached the spot after receiving information and brought the situation under control.
The meeting was aimed at reviewing the Congress's dismal performance in the 2025 assembly elections, in which the party managed to win only six seats despite contesting 61. In the 2020 assembly elections, the party contested 70 seats and won 19.
Deputy mayor and Congress leader Amanullah Khan said that some workers were unhappy over ticket distribution.
No official statement has been issued by the party so far. However, sources said the state leadership is likely to submit a detailed report on the incident to the party high command....
