Champai put under house arrest over RIMS-2 protest
Ranchi, Aug. 25 -- Police arrested former chief minister Champai Soren to restrain him from participating in a programme of ploughing at RIMS-2 construction site in Nagri, where over 5,000 people ploughed defying all prohibitory orders of the district administration amid tear gas shelling.
Soren was put under house arrest, according to officials.
Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) is a state-run superspeciality hospital at Bariatu. RIMS-2 is the second such institution the state government has planned to improve the medical infrastructure of the state, and it has selected a site at Nagri for its construction.
Soren was informed about his house arrest through a social media post.
"The Jharkhand government has put me under house arrest since this morning to stop me from raising the voice of the tribal/indigenous farmers of Nagri," his Facebook post reads.
Apart from social media posts, Soren, talking to a section of the media, said apart from restraining him from participating in the programme, the government had also stopped all his supporters coming from different parts of the state from participating in the ploughing programme.
"Barricades have been put to stop my workers from coming to participate in the programme," he said, expressing his concern over the situation.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP) of the district Chandan Kumar Sinha said, "House arrest has been done to ensure maintenance of law and order."
As Soren remained under house arrest, people opposing the plan of RIMS-2 construction reached the site and ploughed there.
"Around 2 pm people reached the construction site in Nagri, breaking the barrier around the site. Police must have opened as many as 25 rounds of tear gas shells and used a mild lathi charge to disperse the agitators, but the latter remained undeterred. They ploughed the site and sowed seed under their 'Hal Joto Ropa Ropo' programme organised by Nagdi Jamin Bachao Samiti. Police did not use much force; thus, no one sustained injuries in the incident," a police official said.
However, SSP Sinha did not confirm the police action.
"A team is monitoring the law and order of the construction site. Unless the report comes from there, I will not be able to comment on it," SSP Sinha said when contacted for his comment on the matter of tear gas firing....
