Central team takes first-hand account of monsoon damage
Haldwani, Oct. 18 -- An interministerial central team of the Central government visited Nainital district on Friday to assess the extent of destruction caused by the recent monsoon-related disasters. The team held a review meeting with district officials at the Circuit House, Kathgodam, examining damage reports and ongoing restoration and rehabilitation efforts, officials said.
Nainital District Magistrate (DM) Lalit Mohan Rayal presented a comprehensive report detailing the scale of losses and the funds required for recovery. According to the DM, an estimated Rs.798.91 crore is needed for reconstruction and rehabilitation across various departments. The Public Works Department (PWD), Irrigation, Electricity, Rural Engineering, Waterworks, and Education departments were reported to have suffered the most extensive damage.
Highlighting the impact on crucial road networks, Rayal said several major routes, including the Haldwani-Bhimtal-Almora road, a vital link to the hill districts, were severely affected. "The road near Ranibagh Motor Bridge frequently remained closed due to landslides and slope cutting. There is a need for permanent solutions to recurring blockages on key routes," the DM said.
Rayal later showcased photographs and data illustrating widespread destruction of school buildings, road networks, irrigation channels, government properties, and low-lying areas impacted by riverbank erosion and waterlogging....
