Dehradun, Sept. 6 -- An inter-ministerial central team from the Union ministry of home affairs will visit Uttarakhand on September 8 to assess the damage caused by natural disasters in the state this year, officials said. The team will be led by R Prasna, joint secretary in the home ministry, and will arrive in the state on September 8 to review losses and relief work on the ground. "All preparations have been completed by the state government to facilitate the team's visit and provide a clear picture of the situation," said Vinod Kumar Suman, secretary, disaster management and rehabilitation. Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said the state has been receiving "full support" from the Centre in its disaster response. "In this difficult hour, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah have consistently stood by Uttarakhand. Their guidance and assistance have given momentum to relief and rescue operations," Dhami said. The chief minister added that the state has sought a special financial package from the Centre to help in relief and rehabilitation. "We have requested special support to provide immediate assistance to affected families, restore livelihoods, and rebuild damaged infrastructure. Our collective effort will ensure Uttarakhand returns to normalcy soon," he said. The demand has been formalised in a detailed memorandum prepared under the supervision of chief secretary Anand Bardhan. Bardhan has held a series of meetings with senior officials of the Prime Minister's Office, the home ministry and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in New Delhi, apprising them of the situation in Uttarakhand. "The Government of India has taken the matter seriously and directed the state to submit its proposal at the earliest. Accordingly, a comprehensive memorandum detailing the damage and financial requirements has been submitted," Bardhan said. Uttarakhand government on Thursday sought a special economic package of Rs.5,702.15 crore from the Centre to compensate for the losses caused by this year's monsoon and to strengthen vulnerable infrastructure against future natural disasters. In a memorandum sent to the Union home ministry, state disaster management and rehabilitation secretary Vinod Kumar Suman outlined the extent of damage and the urgent requirement for central assistance. According to the memorandum, government departments have suffered direct losses worth Rs.1,944.15 crore due to landslides, flash floods, heavy rains and related calamities between April 1 and August 31 this year. The public works department and rural roads sustained the maximum damage, amounting to nearly Rs.1,163.84 crore, while irrigation structures suffered losses of Rs.266.65 crore. The energy department reported damages worth Rs.123.17 crore, health services Rs.4.57 crore, and school education facilities Rs.68.28 crore. Natural disasters triggered by incessant rains and landslides have claimed at least 79 lives and left 95 people missing across Uttarakhand since April 1 this year, according to the latest district-wise report released by the state disaster management department. Uttarkashi reported the highest fatalities with 16 deaths, followed by Chamoli (11), Dehradun (7), Rudraprayag (7) and Pithoragarh (6). Other districts that recorded casualties include Pauri (9), Udham Singh Nagar (8), Bageshwar (3), Champawat (3), Almora (1), Haridwar (1), Nainital (2) and Tehri (5). Of the 95 missing, Uttarkashi accounted for 76 alone, making it the worst-affected district.
